Event Details

As the season turns, we’re taking a look at a chapter of Niagara’s past that’s perfect for October — Speaking with the Dead: Séances in 1920s Niagara.

Historian Sara Nixon joins John Heckman, The Tattooed Historian, on stage to bring us into the world of Jenny O’Hara Pincock, a St. Catharines spiritualist whose séances, writings and local organizing in the 1920s and 1930s captured a region trying to make sense of a rapidly changing century.

What’s a séance?
A séance is a gathering where people try to communicate with the dead, usually guided by a medium. Spiritualism, the movement behind them, was a serious part of life for many people in the early 20th century, and Niagara had its own believers, skeptics and organizers. This night looks at that world through the story of one local woman.

What to expect
Settle in for a relaxed evening of storytelling and local history, about 60 to 90 minutes on stage, with a little chill to match the season. *There’s no live séance, just the real history of the people who held them.
